Writing Prompt 9: Garden in Fog
Suspended in the Air
Sometimes the land is colder than the sea and a fog hangs over the mountain. Beyond the mist is blue sky holding the promise of a different kind of day. That hedge looms large on the left hand side clipped into a sharp line in contrast to the spongy softness of the grass below.
What place does this remind you of? Why not close your eyes and step in and find a memory there.
A smell of sweet hot batter filled the kitchen and drifted down the hallway to Penny's bedroom.
Penny rubbed her eyes and yawned. Her jaw clicked as she popped the plastic guard out of her mouth. She slipped on her joggers and a sweatshirt she'd thrown over a chair the night before.
"Mum! Mum! We made waffles. Come look."
Archie pulled at his mum's sleeve dragging her over to a considerable pile of homemade baked goods. Uncooked batter dripped down the sides of the waffle-maker and pooled on the counter underneath. A stack of used spoons and bowls and broken eggshells lay in the sink. Penny surveyed the scene before her. Carter stood in her Cath Kidston apron a smattering of roses patterning tastefully across his chest. She placed her hand on his shoulder and leaned in.
"These look wonderful," she said.
Carter bent his head to her kiss.
"We've been busy," he said with a smile.
"Can I have one?" said Archie. "Pleeeeeeeease."
"Of course," said Penny reaching for a plate from the cupboard behind her.
Archie hummed as he squeezed a foaming pile of whipped cream onto his plate and poured syrup into every dimple of his waffle.
Carter scratched at the back of his neck. Thick hair protruded over the top of his t-shirt.
"It's a full moon tonight," said Penny rubbing her hand where he scratched. "You okay?"
Carter nodded. He scraped his nails over the backs of his hands. The hair was beginning to bristle through his skin which was red and sore from his nails.
"The basement's ready," said Penny. "Be careful. Porter's after you."
Carter nodded. He bent his head back and yawned revealing long sharp canines.
